The principal aim of the 2007 partnership between the Paralympic World Cup and NASUWT was to generate passion and interest in the event and inspire the involvement of youngsters both in the North West region and nationally. In 2008 we now aim to build on the great success from last year’s event and involve and inspire more schools.
In 2007 approximately 236 schools applied for complimentary tickets to the Paralympic World Cup and over 7500 tickets were distributed for the events with tickets peaking at 1700 in one day for Wheelchair Basketball. The fiercely contested wheelchair basketball competition was a particular favourite! The introduction of a Paralympic Day in central Manchester also gave schools the opportunity to try their hand at a host of sporting activities and meet a selection of elite athletes who were in the city to compete at the Paralympic World Cup.
It is hoped that even more young people will have the opportunity to be involved in the 2008 event and as such the education site has been revamped to include new competitions and quizzes as well as the exclusive opportunity to apply for complimentary tickets to the event. Profiles of athletes from around the world and classroom activities addressing the concept of disability help to bring the event alive and ensure a greater understanding of Paralympic sport.
We hope you and your students enjoy the resource. You can now keep up to speed with plans for the 2008 event by signing up for the e-newsletter at www.paralympicworldcup.com/newsletters
